Transport Layer Security, formerly known as Secure Sockets Layer is available for you to use with Sendmail.

Enabling TLS on your server will ensure that all traffic to and from the client, or to and from anther host will be encrypted.

This prevents people with network monitoring or network sniffers to capture your e-mail as it travels on the network and decode it later on to see what the message was all about.

Enabling TLS does result in a much higher CPU usage on your system as certificates are used to encrypt and decrypt the packets sent between the two machines. You might want to consider purchasing a SSL Accelerator Card to offload these chores from the CPU.

By using the access database, you can control which hosts are allowed to participate in TLS encryption.

Setup and configuring information for this can be found in the Bat book or on http://docs.sun.com under the current version of Solaris, System Administration, Network Services.
