My main problem with certifications is certifications are a business. This is a list from Cisco:

http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/learning_career_certifications_and_learning_paths_home.html

This is a list from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/view-by-technology.aspx

The area where certification really shines is when you have someone who has been “just doing the job” and they decide to get a certificate. What that does is it forces them to study parts of the program/software/whatever that they man not have studied because it didn’t apply to their particular situation.

So in that sense it does a lot to “broaden their horizons” and gives them a greater understanding of the product because they generally have to study for anything that might be on the test so in that sense it does have a benefit.
